I think this is a good post on hiring, and having been through this from both sides I certainly agree with the assertion that pure CS/Algorithm whiteboard style questions do not always result in good hires and can have, on occasion, the opposite effect.
Obviously if you’re hiring for developers then you need great technical ability in successful candidates, however for me team fit is a vital component as is pragmatism and the ability to learn and I will generally weigh these against the technical competence - oh and the ability to ignore technology religion.
